Take a selfie in daylight

Face a window, without makeup if you can, hair as it naturally falls. Daylight and no filter keep your real skin tone — colored lamps and beauty filters change the result.

Soft Summer is defined by softness first and coolness second. Ash or mousy hair, muted grey-green or grey-blue eyes, and neutral-cool skin, all blended and low in contrast: nothing about the coloring is stark, which is why bright, pure colors look loud on it.

The palette is greyed and gentle: dusty rose, soft blue-grey, sage, mauve, slate navy and rose brown. Slate navy, rose brown, soft grey and soft white are the neutrals. Brushed silver, pewter and matte rose gold suit it better than anything polished, and blended, low-contrast prints better than bold ones.

Its worst colors are the clear, saturated ones: bright orange, lemon yellow, black, hot coral, kelly green and bright turquoise. They are louder than the face, so they are seen first and the skin looks grey next to them.

FAQ

What is the difference between Soft Summer and Soft Autumn?

Both are muted, medium in depth and low in contrast. Soft Summer leans cool, so dusty rose, blue-grey and sage suit it; Soft Autumn leans warm, so camel, muted mustard and khaki olive do. The two share the soft, greyed character, which is why they are often confused.

Can a Soft Summer wear black?

Black is among its worst colors: the hard contrast overwhelms soft coloring. Slate navy or a dark soft grey works where black would, and looks deliberate rather than severe.
